DÍA DEL PATRIMONIO 2019

automatic translation -

On October 5 and 6, the 25th anniversary of Heritage Day is celebrated. In this edition the axis that crosses the cultural proposal is music, intangible heritage and essential factor in the construction of citizenship and cultural identity. It is also an occasion to remember the figure of Amalia de la Vega, a great Uruguayan composer who celebrates 100 years of her birth this year.

Music as a space for dialogue, reflection and exchange maps a process that acquires thickness over time. Although Uruguay is a young country, the musical tradition is long-standing. The origins of the Candombe date back to the 18th century, although, according to the historian and musicologist, Lauro Ayestraran, the native indigenous populations had already begun to write this story much earlier.

Undoubtedly, the melting pot of identities that marked the 20s' product of the successive waves of immigrants arriving in our country, especially of European origin, resulted in the fusion of styles in correlation with the hyperintegrated society model promoted by the Batllista State . The "cultural machine" of modern Uruguay had as its mission to compensate for differences through a single visual and symbolic universe.

The contemporaneity of Uruguayan music has taken new directions, the vast artistic production denotes a heterogeneous repertoire of genres and expressions ranging from candombe, classical music, electronics, hip-hop, jazz, fusion, murga, folklore, rock, Pop, tango, tropical music among many others, and transcends the disciplinary limits, permeates multiple artistic expressions such as cinema, theater, visual arts or literature.

Both music and the city represent political scenarios in which Uruguayan identity is built and reconstructed.
